Life is complicated AF.
The complications - the MESS - aren’t to be avoided or pushed away.
They’re your latent growth accelerators. Leverage that sh*t!
Wait, what? The complications of life are growth accelerators?
Yes, you read that correctly.
The answer’s simple.
The way we pay attention matters, above all else.
How we apply attentional skills in any given moment has the power to let an object (anger, rage, resentment, physical pain, sadness, despair) amplify and become a monster, wreaking havoc on our lives day-in, day-out. Overwhelming anxiety. Constant rage. Heavy despair.
Or, the way we pay attention can actually transform that object into something NEW. We can develop a relationship with that object that changes it (and the way it affects us) FOREVER. In other words, the way you pay attention to a sensory phenomenon can actually increase resilience, increase sensory clarity, increase equanimity, increase concentration capacities, increase compassion, increase love. You know how people say to ‘love it to death’? We get to pour love, compassion, kind awareness and attention onto the moments and sensations of our lives and transform them.
We grow stronger (not weaker) by leaning in with heart.
Do you ever feel like your emotions carry you away? Like you have no control over your actions once anger shows its face? Are you triggered by certain situations or people in life, and no matter what intention you set, you can’t seem to figure out how to RESPOND skillfully in those moments?
Do you live predominantly in your head? Thinking runs the show, the moment you wake up, to the moment your eyes shut at night. And, in order to slow the thinking or get away from yourself, you do things like: have a glass of wine, binge Netflix, scroll through your Instagram feed, embrace workaholism (I’m just your normal Type A!), chase adrenaline, drama bond with your coworkers, or [insert maladaptive coping mechanism here].
You’re not broken. You’re just a part of a society that’s training you to turn away from the present moment.
If you think about it, we live in a culture that’s designed to tell us who to be at all times, what to buy, and what to pay attention to. Information saturation is the gross norm, and people and organizations steal your attention like it’s a full-time job (because for many, it is a full-time job).
While society is building sand castles in the sky and enlisting you to join the masquerade, you have the power to liberate yourself from the system. Right now. In this moment.
You choose what you pay attention to. Period.
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple, right?
Why? Well, you’ve been training for YEARS to turn away, to crave, and to pay attention in all sorts of maladaptive ways. Choosing what you pay attention to might actually feel impossible. Great in theory, but, like, how?
I’m here to tell you that choosing what you pay attention to takes strategy. It takes training. It takes commitment. It requires humility, and beginner’s mind. And, for many, it takes a robust support system. A coach to give you the roadmap and cheer you on every step of the way.
Mindfulness is the roadmap for paying attention.
It’s the path and the outcome.
It’s the elixir for self-liberation, right at your fingertips.
Mindfulness allows us to work with the content of life, regardless of its quality, and develop concentration, clarity and equanimity to serve as the foundation from which we operate in every present moment.
With mindfulness, every moment is an opportunity to develop the attentional skills that move the needle and deepen the quality of your life and happiness.
Pay attention strategically, and this kind of stuff starts to happen…
Develop Equanimity: When we leverage mindfulness meditation and philosophy strategically, we have the power to be fully in each moment, without craving for something else or pushing it away. This phenomenon is also called ‘Equanimity’, and it’s perhaps the most potent by-product of the practice.
Develop a Relationship with Tough Emotions: We have the power to understand that just because we’re having an emotional experience, doesn’t mean we need to cover it up with something outside of us. We can just BE with it, and allow it to completely pass through and dissolve right back into the void from which it came. Mindfulness gives us a safe way to build a relationship with discomfort. If you want to be a resilient leader, developing a relationship with discomfort is absolutely essential. If something has the power to flip your boat, you’re out of the game in a heartbeat. No more numbing out; I’ll help you leverage new tools that clean up your consciousness and give you a life worth LOVING, not just coping with. If you’re doing BIG things in the world, this piece is key to dial in. Developing a relationship with discomfort (physical and emotional) allows you to be a skillful, agile, equanimous leader, manager, participant, artist, creator, partner, sibling, and human.
Show up with Heart: When we practice mindfulness, we can approach life from a heart-centered, compassionate place, fully embracing the humanity around us. Kind, loving awareness can be a lens that you see EVERYTHING through, and you can turn it on like the flip of a light switch. Treating fellow humans with dignity, respect and kindness is a cultivatable skill, one worthy investing in.
Live Life Free of Buffers: When you practice mindfulness and mindset strategies, you don’t need any substance of any kind to feel alive, present and at peace. Your inner climate is equanimous, accepting, and you can fully be there with your people in any situation, because you’re practicing the techniques that not only cut the social anxiety edge, but allow you to deeply connect with yourself and stand in the world from a firm inner grounding. When I say that ‘You are home,’ that’s what I mean. You can take refuge in this moment, in this experience.
Insight arises, more and more. Creatives LOVE this. When you practice mindfulness, spontaneous insights may arise. Often. Business ideas. Optimizations. Fundamental insights about the human experience. Crazy kick ass ideas that you didn’t even know lived inside of you. These insights have the potential to shift your life in BIG ways, if you pair them with wise, courageous action. When you practice mindfulness, you’re nurturing the optimal environment for those insights to arise. Imagine what’s possible if you implemented your big ideas. Imagine the change you can enact in the world. This by-product of the practice cannot be celebrated ENOUGH.
Leverage the uncertainties and the unknown factors in life to SCALE and ELEVATE (instead of letting them drive you into the ground with fear, anxiety, dread). I have strategies to support you in developing an adaptive, productive and loving relationship with the unknowns that arise. “What’s going to happen in my business when I do X? How do I handle this complex situation over here with Y? How the hell am I going to hit those revenue goals in 30 days?” These kinds of questions can send us off spinning in stories marked by fear, disaster, and catastrophe. But I can show you how to contend with “Don’t Know Mind” using mindfulness strategies that actually create the space for a NEW knowing to emerge. This intervention is an innovation incubator, and will completely transform the way you experience confusion.
Increased Clarity: You’ll not only have a deep awareness of your body sensations, and a rich embodied experience. You’ll also have clarity about who you ARE, what you stand for, and what you want in this life. Business decisions become more crisp, realized faster, and flow easier. Aligned choices become obvious, even inevitable. Complex issues or challenges that used to feel sticky, start to break apart rapidly, and the components become acutely discernable with surprising ease. This is the flavor of clarity. This is a key component in elevating your life.
Decreased Anxiety: We live in an oversaturated world, where our attention is being pulled in EVERY direction. This cultural climate is an anxiety incubator. Think about it. You’re literally being trained every second of every day, by every device you’ve opted into owning, to TURN AWAY from the present moment, in order to emotionally regulate. When we practice mindfulness meditation and shift our mindset, we experience LESS anxiety and build the muscle of equanimity to be able to surf the enormity of our day-to-day lives and lean INTO it (not away from it). We also come to understand each sensory experience that culminates into the feeling of anxiety, allowing us to be aware of it instead of right smack inside of it.
No more running away from what’s arising inside of you.
You can develop a relationship with your senses. You can lean in, with love.
You owe it to yourself, and your legacy.
You are the home you’ve been seeking all along.
