Unified Mindfulness presents

Private Group Coaching

Build your mindfulness meditation and daily life practice
led by Unified Mindfulness Lead Coaches in a research-backed, secular system

No more one size fits all. Let’s go beyond the basics, together.

Deepen your mindfulness practice, accelerate your growth, tap into an inspiring community of fellow practitioners, and 10x your happiness —
all by practicing mindfulness systematically.

When it comes to your mindfulness practice, have you ever wondered…

Am I doing this right?

Should I try another technique?

What does it mean when _______ happens?

Am I making progress with my practice? Could I be making more progress?

How do I know I'm on the right track?

Why can't I get back to that experience I had that one time?

How can I stay in that state?

Can you relate?

Does it seems like no one could possibly understand what you’re going through (let alone help accelerate your growth from meditation practice)?

Have you been confused or turned off when a meditation instructor seems more enamored with jargon, than in helping you understand how to practice and apply the principles to your daily life?

Do you experience a lot mental talk (thinking), and have concluded that mindfulness is just not for you?

Have you been meditating alone using apps or videos, but have now stalled out? Has your practice flatlined, and you’re looking to go deeper and practice with intention?

Do you have a hard time practicing meditation for more than a few minutes at a time, and are ready to tap into the power of community to help you feel motivated and to ultimately go deeper with your practice?

Are you the type of person who appreciates a clear, secular roadmap (so that you can integrate your practice insights into all areas of your life while moving forward with strong intention in your mindfulness practice)?

If you can relate to any of the above, you’re in the right place.

This program aims to address these core experiences (and more).

How It Works

What is mindfulness?

Here at Unified Mindfulness, we define mindfulness as a combination of three attentional skills working together: concentration, sensory clarity and equanimity. Mindfulness can be developed through meditation, but it’s so much more than that. Mindfulness is…

  • The Awareness: A focus on present time experience.

  • The Set of Skills: (3) attention skills of concentration, sensory clarity and equanimity, all working together.

  • The Practice: Comprised of a set of techniques to cultivate concentration, sensory clarity, and equanimity.

  • The Path: A process of applying mindful awareness to achieve specific aspects of human happiness (including relieving suffering, increasing fulfillment, understanding yourself fully, acting skillfully out in the world, and making your greatest, most aligned impact in this lifetime.

Our Approach

Unified Mindfulness is comprised of 40 standard techniques inspired by the classification grid called ULTRA (Universal Library for Training Attention). This grid organizes and unifies meditation practices from around the world and across the ages. Designed to give an intuitive, balanced and comprehensive overview of meditative practice and experience, this system culminates in a complete picture of practice that enhances all components of human happiness.

Meet Your Lead Trainers

Shinzen Young

Creator of the Unified Mindfulness system

Shinzen Young is an American mindfulness teacher, neuroscience research consultant, and author of Science of Enlightenment. He developed Unified Mindfulness with an eye toward building a bridge between contemplative practice and hard science.

His systematic approach to categorizing, adapting and teaching meditation has resulted in collaborations with Harvard Medical School, Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Vermont in the burgeoning field of contemplative neuroscience.

Shinzen’s interest in Asia began at the age of 14 when he decided to attend Japanese ethnic school in his native city of Los Angeles.
After majoring in Asian languages at UCLA, he entered a PhD program in Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin. As a part of his thesis research, he lived as a Shingon (Japanese Vajrayana) monk for three years at Mount Koya, Japan. It was then that he received the name Shinzen (真善).

Also during that time, he became friends with Father William Johnston (author of Christian Zen). Fr. Johnston helped broaden Shinzen’s interests to include comparative world mysticism and the scientific study of meditative states.

Upon returning to the United States, his academic interests shifted to the dialogue between Eastern meditation and Western science. Shinzen is known for his interactive, algorithmic approach to mindfulness, and often uses mathematical metaphors to illustrate meditative phenomena. Shinzen oversees all the teacher training programs on Unified Mindfulness, which offers the official certification programs for his system.

  • Love, love, love this course.

I've been meditating for years, including a 10-day Vipassana with SN Guenka. This is the clearest translation of terms and techniques that support an ongoing and sustainable practice. Thank you for this important work. I can't wait to share it with my coaching clients and students.

  • Unified Mindfulness program an essential orientation no matter how much previous practice in other traditions one may have had.

So very much is familiar and comforting to hear, feel and try anew. But, like in any discipline, knowledge of the discipline involves knowledge of the language of that discipline. There is a 'work language' or 'practice language' to UM. I find it well grounded and beautiful explained as one listens and practices the different techniques. Reading and hearing Shinzen Young's "The Science of Enlightenment: How meditation Works" has been especially helpful in understanding the sources of familiar and new terms and approached to practice. But, for me, the beautiful, clear and skillful explanation of the "unification" In Unified Mindfulness has deeply enriched the core program. I am forever grateful to having been pointed to this program and the virtual retreat and gathering options.

  • Practicality and Pragmatism

Well-organized, step-wise introduction to mindfulness that both inspires, and is down to earth, making a health promoting practice do-able for all people.

  • I only wish I had heard this training years ago.

Thoughtful, helpful and insightful. I have been meditating for years, learning from a wise variety of teachers. What I particularly like about Unified Mindfulness is the deep listening and focus approach to help ease me into being fully present in my body. I had discovered taste as a point of focus, so I leaned into smell as well. Previously I had leaned into feel and hear, only. I really like the progression in UM -- Feel, Feel Rest, Gone. UM is a wonderful tool that will now be a part of practice going forward. I only wish I had heard this training years ago.

    -Linda Crayton

“I can literally feel the difference in just a short period of 10 days.”

I am so grateful to have come across this training. The thing about it that is so impressive is its simplicity. This technique can be applied to an established practice or can be the portal in for a complete beginner. Personally I have been using the see, hear, feel technique as a background practice throughout the day. It's really amazing. This has the potential to help so many people. Thank you for this important work it is a gift to the world. I have already signed up for the foundations program because I want to share this with everyone I love and everyone that would like to learn it.

- Jennifer Sharpe, Unified Mindfulness client

“My life has completely transformed after embarking on the path of Unified Mindfulness back in 2010. Never looked back.”

“I discovered the Unified Mindfulness system when I was in the thick of grad school (and at the worst of my addiction). The techniques Feel In and Note Gone markedly shifted the way I perceived and processed my emotions, and served as the important stepping stone for me to begin addiction recovery.

At the age of 27, this program helped me not just get back my life, but to altogether DISCOVER who I am at a fundamental level (for the first time in my life). Mindfulness meditation (and this particular system) has helped me grow my career, serve as an equanimous and compassionate leader, tap into potent levels of creativity, loosen the sticky suffering of craving, aversion and ego, and come to appreciate life in a way I never knew was possible.

Life is practice, today. As a result of my mindfulness practice (on the cushion and in daily life), I feel an enduring ease, inner trust, compassion, and can dance gracefully with life’s twists and turns. I’ve come to love and embrace my authentic self more and more with each passing day, and cultivate my life’s work and service with flowing empowerment.

As a Unified Mindfulness Lead Coach, I am committed to supporting other curious beings who are interested in the power of mindfulness to relieve suffering, increase fulfillment, and live a truly vibrant, meaningful life. Thank you to UM and all beings who bring forth this unprecedented set of programs. In these challenging earthly times, UM offers a beacon of hope. A light house guiding us forward with courage, heart and skill.”

— Jess Lipman, Unified Mindfulness client and Lead Coach

“The love, care, good humor, wisdom and intelligence that went into it are just so palpable.”

“Masterful!  I'm pretty blown away by how much clear thought went into putting this course together. It's pedagogically perfect! So much information, but it unfolds step by step, with fun but also very precise and useful graphics. And the concentration, clarity, and equanimity on display in the way the moderator answers the comments questions is in itself a motivating advertisement for the benefits of this program. Every response from the moderator is as clear as is humanly possible, precisely on target but at the same time somehow in a friendly fun totally un-intimidating sort of way. Bravo to the creators of this thing. The love, care, good humor, wisdom and intelligence that went into it are just so palpable. Bravo.”

— Jeremy Holloway, Unified Mindfulness client

The techniques are designed to meet you where you are with your practice. Also, if you have a hard time focusing your attention on one thing, or accessing inner ‘quiet’, this too is for you. It’s simply about applying concentration, sensory clarity and equanimity to any object of focus of your choosing.

In terms of in-between session time requirements, we invite you to practice 10 minutes (or more) per day of formal practice. Note that you’ll learn mindfulness techniques that you can practice WHILE you’re working or doing daily life activities as well, so there are a lot of opportunities to build the practices into your pre-existing daily life. You’ll learn how to schedule the techniques strategically into your daily life for ultimate impact and momentum.
