TODAY’S SESSION: Equanimity with Uncertainty
Entrepreneurship is FILLED with uncertainty. My teacher Shinzen Young calls this phenomenon Don’t Know Mind.
Uncertainty examples:
How will that launch go?
What will the outcome of X be? How will that impact me?
What will that person think when I say this to them?
What will my audience think when I release this video or social media post or email?
I’ll guide you in a mindfulness technique to transmute uncertainty through deconstructing the sense qualities of uncertainty.
If you find that uncertainty with revenue, with client experiences, with how a launch will go --- ALL the qualities of being a client-centered service provider and entrepreneur - then I’m excited to introduce this technique to you as a balm a resource to ease the suffering of uncertainty.
An equation set that Shinzen shares, which I find very helpful to understand what we’re doing when we practice mindfulness:
Pain X Resistance = Suffering
Pain (or any challenging sensory content) is NOT the problem. It’s the craving/aversion quality of one’s attitude TOWARD that pain that actually creates suffering.
Pain X Equanimity = Purification
When pain or challenging sensory content arises in life, my invitation to you is to apply equanimity to it (not resistance). This can feel like a relaxing down, witnessing it with curiosity or neutrality, and noticing the contours of that sense experience across See, Hear, and Feel. When we apply this quality of attention TO the sense experience of pain, that’s when purification is happening (not suffering). It can be processed, go through its cycle, arise and pass.
The key: No matter the quality of what you’re experiencing (pain, joy, sadness, excitement), if you can apply mindfulness to it (concentration, clarity, equanimity), this leads to feeling greater fulfillment.
Another way to say it: Having complete sense experiences leads to greater fulfillment.
